What you'll build
This is where it all comes together. Knowledge fades unless you use it — so the capstone is six projects of increasing ambition that turn everything you've learned into a portfolio you can show employers. Build them, put them on GitHub, and you're no longer "learning Java" — you're a Java developer.
How to approach these
Project 1 — Beginner Console Application
Build a menu-driven console app such as a banking system or student manager. This consolidates the fundamentals from Phase 1 into your first complete program.
Skills you'll apply
Requirements
- A menu-driven loop that keeps running until the user quits
- Core actions (e.g. create account, deposit, withdraw, view balance)
- Input validation — reject negatives, overdrafts, and bad input
- Store records in an array or ArrayList
- Clean, single-purpose methods and at least one class
Project 2 — Object-Oriented Management System
Build an inventory, library, or employee-management system. This is where object-oriented design and the collections framework shine.
Skills you'll apply
Requirements
- Model your domain with classes, inheritance, and interfaces
- Manage entities with the right collections (List, Map, Set)
- Define and throw meaningful custom exceptions
- Persist data to a file so it survives between runs
- Apply encapsulation and clean OO design throughout
Project 3 — Database Application
Create a JDBC-backed application with a real relational database, a DAO layer, transactions, and full CRUD functionality.
Skills you'll apply
Requirements
- Design a relational schema with related tables
- Full CRUD using PreparedStatements (no SQL injection)
- A DAO layer that isolates all database access
- Multi-step operations wrapped in transactions (commit/rollback)
- Validation and graceful error handling
Project 4 — Multithreaded Application
Build a concurrent task processor, download manager, or simulation that does real work in parallel — safely.
Skills you'll apply
Requirements
- Run work concurrently on a thread pool (ExecutorService)
- Collect results with Futures or CompletableFuture
- Share state only through thread-safe collections
- No race conditions — coordinate access correctly
- Report progress and results back to the user
Project 5 — REST Client Application
Consume a public REST API, model the responses, handle failures gracefully, and persist the data you care about.
Skills you'll apply
Requirements
- Call a public REST API with the Java HttpClient
- Parse JSON into model objects (records work great)
- Handle timeouts, errors, and non-200 responses
- Persist selected data to a file or database
- Present the results in a clean, readable way
Project 6 — Advanced Production-Style Application
The grand finale: a layered application built the way professionals do it — the project that ties every phase together and truly belongs on your CV.
Skills you'll apply
Requirements
- Layered architecture (controller → service → repository)
- A proper build with Maven or Gradle and managed dependencies
- Version control with meaningful commits and branches
- Database persistence, structured logging, and externalised config
- Unit and integration tests with good coverage
- Packaged for deployment as a JAR or Docker image
🎓 Graduation
If you've made it here — and built even a couple of these projects — take a moment. You started not knowing what a variable was, and now you can design object-oriented systems, work with databases and APIs, write concurrent code, test and secure it, and ship it to production. That is a genuinely hard skill, and you earned it.
Key takeaways
- You've covered all 40 modules across 6 phases — from your first line of code to production-ready Java.
- Put every capstone project on GitHub — a public portfolio is worth more than any certificate.
- Keep building. Real, finished projects are how skills stick and how you land the job.
- Contribute to open source, read other people's code, and never stop learning — the field keeps moving.
Where to go from here
Thank you for learning with MasterCoding. This is the beginning, not the end — now go build something you're proud of. 🚀
