What you'll build
This is where it all comes together. Knowledge fades unless you use it — so the capstone is six projects of increasing ambition that turn everything you've learned into a portfolio you can show employers. Build them, put them on GitHub, and you're no longer "learning Kotlin" — you're a Kotlin developer.
How to approach these
Project 1 — Beginner Console Application
Build a menu-driven console app such as a to-do manager or expense tracker. This consolidates the fundamentals from Phase 1 into your first complete Kotlin program.
Skills you'll apply
Requirements
- A menu-driven loop that runs until the user chooses to quit
- Core actions (e.g. add, list, complete, and delete items)
- Input validation using null safety — reject blank or malformed input gracefully
- Store records in a mutable list of data classes
- Clean, single-purpose functions and readable string templates
Project 2 — Object-Oriented Management System
Build a library, inventory, or booking system. This is where Kotlin's concise OO — data classes, sealed hierarchies, and interfaces — shines.
Skills you'll apply
Requirements
- Model your domain with classes, interfaces, and data classes
- Use a sealed class or enum to represent states or categories
- Handle errors idiomatically with Result or sealed error types
- Persist data to a file (JSON via kotlinx.serialization works well)
- Apply encapsulation and clean, immutable-by-default design
Project 3 — Functional Data-Processing Tool
Create a tool that ingests a dataset (CSV or JSON) and produces insights — a log analyzer, sales reporter, or statistics generator — built with a functional, pipeline style.
Skills you'll apply
Requirements
- Parse a real dataset into a list of immutable models
- Transform and aggregate declaratively with map, filter, groupBy, and fold
- Use sequences for efficient processing of larger inputs
- Add your own extension functions to express domain operations
- Output a clean, formatted report — no mutable state in the pipeline
Project 4 — Concurrent Coroutine Application
Build a concurrent tool — a multi-source data fetcher, web scraper, or download manager — that does real work in parallel, safely, with coroutines.
Skills you'll apply
Requirements
- Run independent work concurrently with async and await
- Move blocking I/O onto Dispatchers.IO with withContext
- Model a stream of results as a Flow the UI or output consumes
- Handle cancellation and timeouts cleanly (withTimeoutOrNull)
- Share any mutable state safely with a Mutex or by confining it
Project 5 — Android App or Backend Service
Ship something real: an Android app with Jetpack Compose, or a REST backend with Ktor. Consume an API, model the data, and present it well.
Skills you'll apply
Requirements
- Call a real REST API and parse JSON with kotlinx.serialization
- Handle loading, success, and error states explicitly (sealed classes)
- Use coroutines and StateFlow to keep the UI or responses reactive
- Structure code cleanly (UI ↔ ViewModel ↔ repository, or route ↔ service ↔ data)
- Present results in a polished Compose UI or well-designed API
Project 6 — Advanced Production-Style Application
The grand finale: a layered application built the way professionals do it — the project that ties every phase together and truly belongs on your CV.
Skills you'll apply
Requirements
- Layered architecture with clear separation of concerns
- A proper Gradle (Kotlin DSL) build with managed dependencies
- Version control with meaningful commits, branches, and Pull Requests
- Database or file persistence and externalised configuration (no hard-coded secrets)
- Unit tests with MockK and coroutine tests, plus a green CI pipeline
- Packaged for deployment (a runnable JAR, Docker image, or published app)
🎓 Graduation
If you've made it here — and built even a couple of these projects — take a moment. You started not knowing what a variable was, and now you can design object-oriented systems, process data functionally, write concurrent coroutine code, build real apps and services, test and secure them, and ship them to production. That is a genuinely hard skill, and you earned it.
Key takeaways
- You've covered all 41 modules across 8 phases — from your first line of code to production-ready Kotlin.
- Put every capstone project on GitHub — a public portfolio is worth more than any certificate.
- Keep building. Real, finished projects are how skills stick and how you land the job.
- Contribute to open source, read other people's Kotlin, and never stop learning — the field keeps moving.
Where to go from here
Thank you for learning with MasterCoding. This is the beginning, not the end — now go build something you're proud of. 🚀
